Damn you Tom. I want to get some minis for this now. So I am trading for some Axis models on Bartertown.
What would be a decent German starting force? Should I get the box game first? Where do you get your stuff at "less than retail"?

First thing is pick up a copy of Dust Warfare rulebook. I think Pam has one copy left. It's also available as a PDF from Wargame Vault, for something like $20. Since it came out, the book was sold out and is in it's second printing. If you wish to play the Sino-Soviet Union, you will have to wait for the Operation Zverograd Campaign Book which is not out yet(not to be confused with the Operation Zverograd Campaign Expansion boxed set, which aside from the minis and terrain only has rules and stats for the Dust Tactics boardgame). Next is to grab a command unit. These are pretty much the key required unit for every Platoon. For the Axis it would be a Kommandotrupp, Sturmkommandotrupp, or Sturmpioniere. These will determine the platoon type you can build, which then give the the unit selections. After that, it's pretty flexible on the regular units you can have. Just sort of limits how many you can have of them. Kommandotrupp will have mostly conventional troop choices, Sturmkommandotrupp will have more power armor choices, and Sturmpioniere will have more weird choices. The most economical way to get into the game is to buy either of the Dust Tactics starter sets. Regardless of the fact that you are buying rules and gameboards for the boardgame, the retail prices is far less than the models included. However, you are buying an Allied and an Axis force, so if you have a friend who's interested and wants to play Allied, then you are set. The original $100 starter set was the best value as you got 2 medium walkers for each faction and a lot of troops. Ironically, it didn't sell well when Pam had it and she ended up dumping it at 1/2 and even then had a hard time getting people to pick it up (I was tempted myself, but couldn't justify the expense at the time). However, when Dust Warfare came out, its value skyrocketed. I've seen this set sell on eBay up to $200! The newer $80 revised starter set is still available. It is sort of decontented to get a lower price point. However, they focused on all new models so that people who bought the first set could find value with it. So you get 1 Light walker for each faction and a mix conventional and power armor troops with 2 different heros. You can tell they really decontented this by replacing the thick cardboard tiles with a poster and using a flimsey box. The revisions are really for the Dust Tactics rules. If you are looking for cheap online sources, aside from the occasional deal on eBay, Miniature Market and FRP seem to have the best prices lately (generally 30% off, and if you make large orders the shipping tends to get more economical). Also, there is a source on eBay that is parting out some of the expansion sets, as well as from a lot of other games too. Also, go to Dust Models for sneak previews of new models before Fantasy Flight shows them off in their Dust Warfare or Dust Tactics sites. They also sell some cool accessories like vehicle crew and customization gear, decals and bases. However, shipping from Hong Kong can be cost prohibitive if you're making small orders. BTW, if you're just looking for some fluff to read, download the rulebooks and expansions for Dust Tactics from the FFG site. There is lots of good reading about the Dust world that is not in Dust Warfare rulebook.

BTW, RIW has 2 of the rulebooks left in stock. Currently Pam is only stocking new releases of Dust, she has upped the quantities due to the rapid sales of material off her shelf recently (mostly Axis and Allies). However this has slowed down with all the SSU releases. I suspect this is due to all the people buying the Dust Tactics releases are using them for Dust Warfare and the SSU doesn't have any rules material out for Dust Warfare until the Operation: Zverograd Campaign Book comes out.
FRP has posted they have the Operation: Zverograd Campaign Book for Dust Warfare in stock.
I have some proxies that I have been using out of my extensive Weird War II collection. Mostly being my Cyborg Apes from AE-WWII and my zombies from Incursion. I've got a conversion of the Rosie figure in the works, as I just can't justify spending $35 on a Dust Tactics expansion set for the two figures that I will use for Dust Warfare. If you're looking for a Sigrid von Thaler figure (which is only available in the OOP $100 starter set), look for the AE-WWII Volksturm Group Leader, with the right combination of bitz you can make a good representation of her.

So what do you think of the DUST Premium minis?

Why pay 2-3x the price for models painted to a lesser degree than what you can do yourself?
I've only seen the photos of the Premium minis and they look like a step or two above the AT-43 stuff. Keep in mind the photos are generally the better "studio grade" stuff, and may not be exactly what you get in the box. I suppose if you were at Gen Con and bought them right there where you can see exactly what you were getting and was happy with it, then it would be OK.
Remember these are Made in China.

Well, I guess depending on how much the trade is worth to you.
I suppose if you paid a lot for these pre-painted mecha, you will want to paint the rest of you models to match them, or paint over that expensive paintjob. Given that you have a clean slate to work with, it shouldn't be a problem. Unless both mecha are painted in different camo patterns.
I think the early stuff was all done in German Grey. The new Premium releases have different schemes for the different campaigns now.

Oh, I noticed that Dust Models will be selling Bazooka Joe and Sigrid von Thaler in a set. These figures were only available in the $100 Dust Tactics starter set and that is OOP. Unfortunately it looks like both figures are sold in a set and currently only part of the Premium pre-painted line for $40! Hopefully FFG releases them and the other figures (Rosie, OZ-117, Markus, Manfred Kruezer, Angela, and The Chef) tied to Dust Tactics expansion sets, simply pre-primed, as part of another heroes pack like they did with the first three heroes packs: Allies: The Priest, Johnny One-Eye and Action Jackson Axis: The Totenmeister, Stephan and Grenadier X SSU: Nikolai, Yakov, and Red Yanna Although I'm glad to see they're now releasing Tina and Hyane in 1/48 scale. Before this model was only available in 1/35 scale. I wonder if they'll come out with any North African campaign pack. Needless to say, this would make a good German Officer - Houndmaster Hero for AE-WWII.

Severedirkitis found these. Someone beat me to making stat cards for Dust Warfare, and these are just super cool. Rodney Smith's Dust Warfare Unit CardsBTW, I found these work ideal with my tablet. I fill a directory with the stat cards of the units I'm using in a game, open the gallery for that directory and I can quickly flip through these cards blown up to post card size pretty quickly while playing.

Congratulations, those boxed sets have usually been averaging $130 on eBay lately. BTW, that box is perfect for storing your mecha. I made some partitions out of foam core and you can store up to a dozen light and medium mecha in it.
Hopefully the guy puts up SSU stat cards shortly.
I'm just about done with all of my Axis and Allies infantry. I'm making a conversion of Rosie, as I don't see the point buying Dust Tactics expansion set for the figure. I posted some pics of her last night on Facebook.
