Well we had a fun time trying out Starfleet - ACTA saturday night. We had Doug and Scott playing Federation vs. Shawn playing Romulans and Rob playing Klingons, while I played Orions and just mixed it up with everyone.
Shawn has bought a squadron box of Romulans, Doug has a fleet box of Federation and I have have a large assortment of all the fleets (using the old Starline 2400 series models).

It was indeed fun. Frakking supercharged photon torpedoes... as you were playing Klingons, I think the appropriate phrase would be more like "It was a good day to die."

I don't own any of the Starfleet stuff for ACTA but I do own 4 fleet boxes for the Noble Armada version of the game along with the rules in hardcopy and the new fleets book in PDF.

Ok Tom, after our game Saturday I think I''d like a rundown on how the different factions play. Mostly interested in this order: Gorn then Romulans, while Klingons and Feds are tied.
Thanks

OK here's from memory. I'll have to review the book again.
Federation General Feel - Good overall mix of ships, probably the best shields. Weapons Selection - Phasers Drones and Photon Torpedoes Standout Feature - Photon Torpedoes - probably most devastating weapon in game. Phaser 3s for defense.
Klingon Empire General Feel - Good manueverability, decent initiative advantage Weapons Selection - Phasers, Drones and Disruptors Standout Feature - Reinforced Shields, Anti-Drone Defense System
Romulan Empire General Feel - Wide selection of ships Weapons Selection - Phasers and Plasma Torpedoes Standout Feature - Cloaking Device and Plasma Torpedoes
Plasma Torpedoes, like Drones, work a bit differently than in Federation Commander or SFB. They strike instantly. However, unlike Drones, they can only be countered by Phaser fire as you can't tractor beam a PT. Also it requires multiple hits, depending on the size, to stop a PT.
Gorn Federation General Feel - Tough. Manuever like overloaded Trucks. Lots of Hull Points. Weapons Selection - Phasers and Plasma Torpedoes Standout Feature - Plasma Torpedoes and Lots of Marines
Kzinti Hegemony General Feel - Tough. Manuever like overloaded Trucks. Lots of Hull Points. Weapons Selection - Phasers, Disruptors and Drones Standout Feature - Lots and Lots of Drones!
Orion Pirates General Feel - Very small selection of customizable ships Weapons Selection - Almost anything you want. Standout Feature - Stealth Coating and you can equip a ship anyway you like it (even put a Cloaking Device on them)
Tholian Holdfast General Feel - Small, Powerful, Very Manueverable but Fragile Ships Weapons Selection - Phasers Standout Feature - Web Projector - best defense against Drones and Plasma Torpedoes

Thanks Tom. Are they all as well balanced as the Feds and Klingons?

Mongoose Publishing has put out Fleet Update #1, which features Escorts (which includes a new rule allowing ships with this trait to provide defensive fire for nearby ships) and Battleships (including the insane Federation Mars Class Battleship). Also they are putting up official stat sheets on Wargame Vault. They are $5 for each faction (currently Gorn and Federation are up). They are much nicer looking than mine, but lack the special rules being spelled out.

Are they still making this game? I want to get in on the Gorn. Any idea what comes in the Gorn starter set in case I have to buy them all separately>

Actually yes. Amarillo Design Bureau is taking over control of the game from Mongoose. ADB tends to be a bit slow and methodical when it comes to game releases, but generally gets things right the first time, sort of the polar opposite of Mongoose.
They have released the Starfleet ACTA Book 1 Revision 2D about a month ago and have just recently released their own SSD cards for ships (so I don't have to make any more of my own).
Biggest changes I see in the rules are:
Drones are no longer treated as simple direct fire weapons that can be intercepted. Instead if they are fired outside of 12" a drone token is placed on the board to represent the drone, which then has a 12" move and is Supermanueverable. So now you can launch waves of drones at distant targets and have them hit later in the game. Makes Kzinti players more fun. Plasma Torpedoes seem to be handled like the original rules however.
Labs seem to have a bit more use, as they can gather intelligence on enemy ships, but this seems more like a scenario driven feature.
I think there's more uses for shuttlecraft, other than just suicide shuttles.
Tholian Web Generators are still pretty oversimplified (to be updated in a later release), basically still an over powered Tractor Beam that kills all Seeking Weapons.
Book 1 just covers the following factions: Federation, Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire, Gorn Confederation, Kzinti Hegemony, Tholian Holdfast, Orion Pirates, and Civilians.
