I picked up Wizkids Star Trek Attack Wing today at my FLGS Riw Hobbies. After reading about it and seeing at Gen Con last week, it was on my must buy list. The game mechanics were licensed from Fantasy Flight Games hugely successful X-Wing game and some Star Trek tweaks added.
So far just opening the box, you can tell this game must come out of the same plant in China as X-Wing. The size, shape and style of the packaging are the same. The plastic parts like the maneuver wheel pins are the same, and flight stands appear to be an improved version of the X-Wing bases. The components for the flight stands are interchangeable with the X-Wing parts as well. The many of the cardboard counters are the same shape, in fact all the movement templates are identical (aside from the printed graphics). The dice are very similar to X-Wing ecxept they have a marbeling texture and qll the icons are different.
There were a few pennies squeezed out of this. You can tell the overall production value of the game is less than X-Wing. First of all the three ships included are all visible in the box, and are not to the same level of detail or paint quality the FFG X-Wing models are. At first I thought they were simply the same models that Wizkids sells as Star Trek Tactics (aka Heroclix with Star Trek ships), however upon close inspection of several Attack Wing and their respective Tactics models there are subtle differences in the panel detail that suggest the new models came different tools. However from a foot away you'd probably never guess.
Furthermore the printed graphics on the cards and tokens apppear darker and harder to see, particularly the photographs of the ships. The Deep Space 9 and Scimitar tokens are very hard to see. The cards are also printed on very cheap grade textured material. The photographs printed on the cards look a bit low rez.
Some pluses, the bases shape is improved, there are icons on the range template that show which bonus dice you get. The expansion boosters come with scenario cards and appropriate tokens, and you get more crew to choose from to point-up your ship. Upgrades all appear to be faction specific. Almost all the ships appear to be Next Generation era, except for the Constitution class Enterprise, which is very small and supposedly to scale with the other ships. You can choose from The Federation, Klingon Empire, Romulan Empire, and The Dominion.
Overall, the size of the ships are very compatible with the old Galoob Micro Machines, and remounting Star Trek Tactics models. This means my Cor Sec Engineering (and those Litko bases) for X-Wing.
