The forum was looking a little bare... Thought I would spruce it up with a little AAR from gaming on Thursday.
I went up to RIW hobbies in Livonia with my Deathwing in tow to see if I could get a game. I managed to get 2 games in, and was still home by 10:30!
My list: 1850
Belial (makes terminators troops)
Chaplain in Terminator armor
5 Terminators, Cyclone M/L
5 Terminators, Cyclone M/L
8 Terminators, 2 Lightning Claw, 5 Thunder hammer, 1 Assault Cannon (Belial goes here)
7 Terminators, 5 Lighting Claw, 1 Thunder hammer, 1 Assault Canon (Chaplain goes here)
Land Raider Crusader (chaplain squad goes here)
The second game was 2K, and I used the above, + a dreadnaught with the deathwing upgrade, ML and Lazcannon.
Game Highlights: 1850 Vs Guard
Game 1 was vs an imperial guard player, using the new book. Total tank list, 3 Chimeras with squads, 2 Executioner Russes (the ones with the plasma turret) a tank commander in the executioner? (the one with the 20 shot gatling cannon) 3 hellhounds, (one was the melta variant, Devil dog?) a Basalisk, and a psycher with divination (so he could use prescience on the tanks)
The mission was the one with one objective on either side. The table was fairly open, with some LoS blocking terrain, but definite firing lanes. (not like the terminators use cover anyway) I had the idea of placing my objective as close to the center line as possible, knowing I couldn’t afford to hang back. His was in the back corner surrounded by a chimera, the 2 plasma tanks, and the basilisk. (no way I was getting back there really…)
I went first, and used deepstrike to put Belial and his squad in the center of his line, almost on top of his tank commander. Belial gets an extra VP if he or his squad kills the enemy warlord, and I wanted to try to capitalize on that, given there was only one objective each. I got first blood by killing the devil dog tank with the landraider which was sitting on my objective. He then rolled up on Belial with the 2 hellhounds, the executioner, and 2 chimera, and killed the terminators down to the assault cannon and Belial. He proceeded to wipe out one of my 5 man terminator squads with precienced executioners. (8 plasma templates maybe? re-rolling scatter… gross)
In the second turn I charged the tank commander but failed to kill the tank, (one poor terminator with a power fist and 3 attacks L)and I managed to take out one of the plasma tanks with the other 5 man unit of termies, but I couldn’t get out of the landraider, because I was safer inside. His second turn saw Belial disappear in a puff of smoke, and my other terminators disappear in a glowing ball of plasma. Turns 3-5 I sat in the landraider on the objective, playing for a tie. I managed to kill the tank commander in turn 3 with the landraider, giving me warlord, first blood, and 3 points for an objective, assuming I could hold it. He had warlord, probably linebreaker, and his objective, meaning we would tie. He spent turns 3-5 driving his Chimera around knowing I would have to get out to claim the objective, and ineffectively bombing the landraider with the Basalisk.
I got out in turn 5, I used the landraider as mobile cover, and hugged the objective, praying for the end of the game. (you can’t claim inside a vehicle) He threw everything at trying to kill the terminators, but failed to knock me off the objective. He then failed to get out of the chimera in my deployment zone (he went flat out to get there) meaning he didn’t get linebreaker! The game ended on 5 with me winning 5-4 and not actually playing on the last 3 turns. He lost, rather than me winning. Fun game, nice army, good guy, and honestly I thought it was pretty much over after turn 2.
Game 2 Highlights: 2K vs Necrons
I used the same list as above, but added the Dreadnought to bump it up to 2K. In retrospect 160 points of dread is an expensive dread, but it kept the theme, and was easy to bump the army up.
The necron list had 2 big units of wraiths, led by destroyer lords, armed to the teeth. (mindshackle scarabs, preferred enemy, warsythe, ect) a big scarab herd, 3 spyders, a monolith, 3 warrior units, and the gun version of the annihilation barge. The mission was kill points.
I got first turn, and dumped Belial into the middle of the necron army. Again the plan was to assassinate the enemy warlord for the bonus point. I now realize Belial can’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag compared to most characters out there, and I won’t be doing that again! Between night fighting, not really having much firepower on the table, and my second deepstriking unit misshaping and being placed in the back corner of the table, I didn’t do much turn 1. His turn one, he assaulted Belial with the spyders, and wraiths, killing everyone but Belial and one terminator, and assaulted the landraider with the scarabs, destroying it.
Turn 2, I got to assault the second unit of wraiths with the landraider terminators and chaplain, but didn’t kill them, Belial did nothing, but didn’t die, and I managed to kill off the scarabs with a 5 man terminator squad. (powerfists squish them good) He proceeded to kill off my landraider terminators in his turn, and not kill Belial.
Turn 3, Belial survived another round of combat, I failed to kill off the remaining wraith and destroyer lord in shooting. His turn, he killed off another 5 man terminator squad by shooting and charging it with the wraith, and Belial survived again.
Turn 4, I failed to kill off anything, and he finally got Belial, and I conceded with only a dread and a 5 man terminator squad on the table. I got 2 units, he already killed 6 + warlord bonus, and there was no way I was going to get any more points.
His list was tough, he was a good player, made no mistakes, and my dice were below average. The flat black and silver necrons with the green highlights is classic and always looks good. In the first round of combat with the wraiths, I rolled 5 ones out of 8 dice for armor saves….what are you going to do? In 6 rounds of combat, Belial only got to swing in two rounds, due to mindshackle scarabs….what are you going to do?
That said, deepstriking turn one, into the center of his army was stupid. Moving the landraider up turn one, allowing myself to get scarab charged was stupid. I did not lose because of dice, I lost because I was stupid. Deathwing is fun to play, and it looks good on the table, but it is definitely NOT bleeding edge competitive. Or at least, not the way I am building them.
